What is the Purpose of Cupping?

If you’ve come across cupping online or at your local chiropractic practice, you could likely think that it’s a new development. However, it’s much older than you might expect. Cupping is an ancient therapy that has been recorded as far back as 1,550 B.C. Like many of the best alternative therapies, cupping is a completely non-invasive process that has been shown to be highly effective at relieving muscle tightness and discomfort, as well as offering patients a range of other important health benefits. In fact, it is so successful that it is now an extremely popular chiropractic technique.

What Is Cupping And How Does It Work?

Cupping involves the placement of a number of cups onto the skin to create suction. The cups themselves can be made from glass, bamboo, silicone, or earthenware, depending on what is offered by your practitioner.

During conventional cupping, your practitioner will put a flammable substance, such as alcohol or herbs, in a cup and set it on fire. As the fire goes out, they will put the cup upside down onto your skin. As the air inside the cup cools down, it naturally creates a vacuum that pulls on your skin, causing the blood vessels to expand. Each cup may be left in place for anywhere from one to five minutes. A modern alternative uses a pump to create the vacuum inside the cup instead.

Another type of cupping, called ‘wet cupping’, follows the initial process with small incisions being made into the skin and a second cupping. This draws out a small amount of blood and is believed to also remove impurities. However, this type of cupping is less common.

Cupping is very safe provided it is carried out by a trained and experienced professional. Side effects that may occasionally occur include mild discomfort, burns, and bruises.

Health Benefits Of Cupping

Cupping can be successfully used to help with a wide range of health problems, from muscle pain to headaches and low immunity. Here are some of the ways in which cupping could improve your overall health.

Boosted circulation: Cupping has been proven to increase circulation, sending more blood and nutrients around the body more efficiently. This can help accelerate the healing process, enhance the function of all body systems including your natural immune system, and even reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Detoxification: A lot of people talk about detoxing, but there are only a few ways in which you can truly remove toxins from the body, including cupping. Cupping increases blood flow which helps to flush any toxins through the lymphatic system more efficiently.

Improved digestive system: If you are suffering from digestive problems, then cupping could be a great treatment for you. When cupping is performed over the abdomen, it stimulates the digestive organs which can help them to work more efficiently. This can be beneficial in improving or even eliminating issues like constipation and indigestion.

Reduce muscle pain: One of the main reasons why people seek cupping therapy is to obtain relief from muscle pain. When cupping is applied, it opens up the blood vessels in the muscles and skin which helps to reduce pressure and muscle tension, alleviating your pain naturally without using medications.

Improve scarring and stretchmarks: Cupping has also been shown to be effective at helping to reduce the appearance of scarring and stretchmarks. It does this by removing toxins, restoring lymphatic circulation, and reducing excess fluid that contributes towards uneven skin textures.

Other health benefits: Other conditions that cupping is believed to help with include:

  • Blood disorders

  • Rheumatic diseases

  • Fertility problems

  • Skin issues like eczema and acne

  • High blood pressure

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Anxiety and depression
